EVO5-9 (Brembo) Front Big Brake Upgrade Kit: EVO 1-3

Build your custom EVO 5-9 Front Big Brake Upgrade Kit!

This upgrade uses the much larger 4-piston Brembo calipers that came stock on EVO 5-9 and the matching EVO 5-9 rotors and allows you to install them on your EVO 1-3.

This kit starts with our own mounting bracket and hardware kit. You can then add the calipers, pads, rotors, and brake lines of your choice.

The rebuilt EVO 5-9 Brembo calipers are available in 4 finishes: bare cast, painted gloss red, painted gloss black, or painted flat black. There is NO core charge associated with these calipers. If calipers are purchased with this kit, a new banjo bolt and sealing crush washers will be included with each caliper.  For details on the calipers, please refer to the "Related products" section near the bottom of the page.

Installing this kit using the brackets and hardware method is a bit unusual compared to similar brake upgrades in that in order for the calipers to clear the knuckle and bracket a small amount of material must be removed from the caliper. The area where the material is removed is not a critical structural area, but there's no denying that removing material will (at least in theory) weaken the structure of the caliper.

There are two methods of attaching EVO 5-9 4-piston Brembo calipers to an EVO 1-3:

  • (1) The more or less traditional method where the RTM bracket is bolted to the steering knuckle (with bolts passing thru the steering knuckle into threaded holes in the bracket). As discussed earlier, some material will need to be removed from the caliper in order to clear the knuckle/bracket.
  • (2) Tapping (also known as threading) one of the caliper mounting holes in the knuckle (with an M14x2 tap) and bolting one of the ends of the RTM bracket to the knuckle with an M14 bolt. This method requires less material to be removed from the caliper than method (1) above.

Each of the methods above offer certain advantages over the other and there is no obviously superior method.  The main advantage of method (1) is ease and simplicity.  It requires no tapping of the knuckle, the brackets are simply bolted to the knuckle with supplied hardware.  The main disadvantage is that more material must be removed from the caliper to accommodate one of the bolt heads. The main advantage of method (2) is that less material needs to be removed from the caliper since one of the bolts attaching the bracket to the knuckle is threaded in from the backside and thus its head does not protrude into the caliper.  The main disadvantage is the extra time and effort of tapping the knuckle.

NOTE: The basic hardware kit includes brackets, spacers, bolts and washers. The quantity and size of the bolts differ slightly depending on the style of kit chosen. Also, depending on the style of kit chosen, a selection of taps is available to enable you to tap your knuckle.

NOTES on USE of HUBCENTRIC RINGS:
You MAY require hubcentric rings to properly mount EVO 5-9 rotors to your vehicle.  For details, please refer to "EVO 5-9/Genesis Brake Rotor Hubcentric Rings" found in the "Related products" section near the bottom of the page.

NOTE: We should point out that these caliper mounting brackets are very strong units: they're made from 1/2" thick STEEL (NOT aluminium) and are extremely strong. The bolts used are 12mm and grade 10.9. These are NOT weak, flimsy components, they are strong and robust. In fact, we'd wager that under the most extreme braking conditions, the "spokes" on your aluminium rims would shear away from the outer portion of the rim, or perhaps the caliper itself would disintegrate long before these brackets failed!

NOTE: It should be noted that the calipers that we offer in painted finish are NOT powder coated or painted at the factory. We purchase the calipers in a bare cast state and spray paint them to order. We mask areas such as bleeder screw ports, brake line ports, bolts and the like from overspray, but the calipers are NOT completely disassembled into individual components, painted, then reassembled. The results are similar to what one would expect if they painted the calipers themselves. We are, afterall, charging only $35 to paint two calipers. It should also be noted that we paint these calipers only when an order is placed, we do NOT stock pre-painted calipers and since it takes a full day for painted calipers to dry, any order that includes them will be shipped out one day later than it would otherwise.

NOTE: While your standard EVO 1-3 brake lines will fit these calipers, we strongly suggest if you want the best bang for your buck from this upgrade, you should be replacing your old rubber lines with braided stainless lines.

NOTE: If lines for all four corners are ordered, rear lines will be for stock EVO 1-3 rear calipers.

NOTE: For details on all the various calipers, pads, lines and rotors available for this upgrade, please refer to the "Related products" section near the bottom of the page.

NOTE: As many of our customers are aware, RTM Racing has on its premises and operates a machine shop. For this reason, we have often been approached by our early EVO customers and asked to convert various rotors with a 5x114.3 bolt pattern to the early EVO friendly 4x114.3 bolt pattern by drilling out the rotor hat. We've always been reluctant to do so because of liability issues. The idea being that four bolts clamping down the rotor (and wheel) is not as strong as five bolts. It is due to these liability concerns that RTM will insist that a liability waiver be accepted by anyone who purchases 4x114.3 rotors.

RTM LIABILITY WAIVER: I understand there is a reason that larger wheels/brakes are generally fastened to the car with more bolts than smaller wheels/brakes. I am undertaking this modification to use larger brakes than my car was designed for at my own personal risk, and the vehicle is to be used for offroad use only. I will NOT hold RTM Racing in any way liable, as this modification has been performed at my own request and insistence. Additionally, any rotor that we modify to the 4x114.3 bolt pattern CANNOT be returned.

THE MORE YOU BUY, THE MORE YOU SAVE!  Purchase either a pair of calipers or a pair of premium rotors as part of your kit, and we will reduce the price of the bracket/hardware kit by $30.00.  Purchase both, and we will lower the price by $60.00.  Add a set of premium pads (Hawk or EBC) and brake lines, and we will reduce the price by $90.00!  You will be getting the brackets and hardware at well below our cost!

Application: EVO (I-III).
