RTM Fuel Surge Tank (Single Pump) Kit

A fuel surge tank is designed to prevent fuel starvation to the engine on vehicles with inadequate fuel tank baffling or where the vehicle experiences vigorous motions such that the fuel in the tank is temporarily displaced from the fuel pump intake. Either of these situations most commonly occurs in situations such as autocross and the like where sudden sharp cornering, braking and acceleration can cause the fuel in the main fuel tank to slosh about vigorously.  This can lead to your fuel pump being starved of fuel.  As you can imagine, this is VERY undesirable.  Even if this fuel starvation exists only for a very short time, it is more than enough to cause a lean condition in your engine.  This is NEVER good.

The fuel pump in the surge tank feeds the fuel rail(s).  The volume of fuel inside the surge tank acts as a buffer to always keep the surge tank pump supplied with fuel. This volume is maintained by the main fuel tank's "lift" pump as well as the fuel returning from the fuel pressure regulator. Since the surge tank is constantly full of fuel, it ensures that your fuel rail receives an uninterrupted supply of fuel even if the pump in your main tank (which is generally referred to as a "lift" pump) experiences fuel starvation. 

This is a single pump surge tank which accommodates the industry standard "Bosch 044" style pump.  We carry three such pumps: the Bosch 044 (part no. 61944), the AEM 50-1005 and the Bosch-style 044 (part no. FuelPump-044).

There are three feed/return ports on the surge tank: 

• main feed port: inlet from the feed line of the main tank
• regulator return port: inlet from the return line from the fuel pressure regulator
• main return port: an overflow outlet back to the main tank

All above ports are -6 ORB female.

NOTE: The AEM 50-1005 pump is a perfect fit into the opening of the surge tank, however, there is a very small amount of interference between the very top of the OD of the pump and the ID of the pump clamping ring.  This can be corrected by removing a small amount of material from either the very top of the OD of the pump or the ID of the clamping ring.  Think a few minutes with a dremel in one or both of these areas and you'll get the idea.

NOTE: This surge tank has provision for one fuel pump.  A fuel pump MUST be installed and sealed into the fuel pump port because the entire surge tank system must be completely sealed to prevent fuel leaks. For the same reason, all three feed/return ports must sealed (either with various fittings, hoses, etc or else they would need to be sealed off).  The entire surge tank system (which includes the surge tank itself plus all related plumbing) must be completely sealed from the atmosphere.
