OEM Timing Trigger Plate (Crank Sprocket Flange): 1g DSM (7-Bolt)/EVO 1-3

Genuine OEM part.

This is the plate that sits behind the crank sprocket (and in front of the balance belt sprocket). This is the part that contains the timing "notch" associated with the crank pulley. This notch is used to align the crank pulley with the respective pointer on the engine's front cover, which in turn, assures that the crank is at TDC. This plate also acts as a flange to prevent the timing belt from sliding towards the engine (which it would have a tendancy to do).

Sometimes this plate gets damaged or lost during an engine rebuild, etc. It should be noted that since the edge of the timing belt presses right into this part, a bend or split in it could easily tear into your t-belt. As you can imagine, this is generally not acceptable, so if yours is damaged, don't mess around.

On vehicles with a separate crank sensor, this plate is used by the sensor to determine the position of the crankshaft. The rotation of this plate is said to "trigger" the sensor and thus the term "timing trigger plate". On vehicles that don't use a CAS, it's not really a trigger plate. For the record, Mitsu refers to it as a "crank sprocket flange". We don't think it's too important what you call it, but it IS important that your engine has one of these and that it's undamaged.

NOTE: When installing this part, it's critical that it be oriented the correct way (and not "backwards"). If it's installed backwards, the timing notch will be in the wrong spot and thus "throwing off" your timing (even though all the marks will appear correct).
